Understanding Your Pain

What Kind of Pain Is This?

Not every ache needs the same level of care. These factors help guide the right next step:

  • 🦵 Sprain or Strain

Soreness, stiffness or mild swelling after activity or movement often fits a same-day urgent-care evaluation.

  • 🦴 Possible Fracture

Inability to bear weight or use the joint, major swelling, or significant trauma raises concern for a fracture and changes the urgency of evaluation.

  • ⚡ Neurologic Red Flags

New weakness, numbness or other neurologic symptoms need same-day attention — tell our front desk when you arrive and you'll be evaluated right away.

  • 🔁 Chronic or Recurrent Pain

Long-standing, recurring pain is generally better managed through continuing care with a regular provider rather than repeated urgent-care visits.

Inability to bear weight or use the joint, major swelling, significant trauma, or new neurologic symptoms all raise the urgency of evaluation. Let your provider know exactly what you're experiencing so they can guide you to the right level of care.

How We Evaluate

Evaluation

Your clinician may assess:

  • ✓ How symptoms started
  • ✓ Pain location
  • ✓ Range of motion
  • ✓ Tenderness
  • ✓ Swelling
  • ✓ Strength
  • ✓ Sensation
  • ✓ Ability to walk or use the affected joint
  • ✓ Other neurologic or vascular findings

On-Site X-Ray When Appropriate

If the evaluation suggests a possible fracture or another condition requiring radiography, digital X-ray is available on site for appropriate studies.

Leg pain with swelling?

One-sided calf swelling, warmth and pain can signal a blood clot. Walk in — we assess you immediately and arrange the ultrasound needed to confirm or rule it out.

Musculoskeletal Care

Back, Neck, Knee and Joint Pain Near Oro Valley and Catalina: Examined, X-Rayed and Treated in One Visit

Pickleball, golf, hiking, cycling, yard work in the heat, a fall off a ladder, a fender-bender on Oracle Road — the northwest side produces a lot of sore backs and swollen knees. What most of them need is a same-day exam, an X-ray when the findings call for it, the right medication and the right brace — not a three-week wait for a specialist and not an ER bill. Sanova Urgent Care on North Oracle Road does all of that on a walk-in basis, six days a week.

Low back pain and sciatica

Acute strain, muscle spasm, disc-related pain and sciatica shooting down the leg. We examine for nerve involvement and weakness, treat with anti-inflammatories, muscle relaxants and, when appropriate, a short steroid course or injection, and give you specific movement guidance. Progressive weakness, saddle numbness or bladder changes are escalated immediately.

Neck pain and whiplash

Sleeping wrong, desk posture, a rear-end collision. We check range of motion and nerve signs, X-ray the cervical spine when indicated, and treat strain and whiplash with medication, heat and a home program. We document the visit for auto insurance claims when needed.

Knee injuries and knee pain

Twists on the court, meniscus and ligament sprains, runner's knee, swelling after a fall. Stability testing and on-site X-ray sort a sprain from a fracture; we brace, provide crutches if needed, and refer to orthopedics only when the exam or X-ray shows a tear or fracture that needs it.

Ankle, foot, wrist, hand and shoulder

Ankle sprains and fractures, foot pain after a hike, wrist and hand injuries from falls, shoulder strains and rotator cuff pain, tennis and golfer's elbow. X-ray on site, splints, slings and walking boots in stock, and same-day treatment. See X-ray and fracture care.

Gout and arthritis flares

A red, hot big toe, ankle or knee that hurts to touch is treated the same day with anti-inflammatories, colchicine or a steroid, with uric acid testing on site. Osteoarthritis and rheumatoid flares get relief and a plan back to your primary care doctor or rheumatologist.

Refills and follow-up

Bridge refills for non-controlled medications such as meloxicam, naproxen, cyclobenzaprine or gabapentin when you can't reach your prescriber (no opioids or other controlled substances). Rechecks are walk-in — no appointment needed.

What happens at your visit

Vital signs, then a provider takes the story — how it started, what makes it worse, any numbness, weakness or fever — and examines the painful area, comparing it with the other side. If a fracture, dislocation or significant injury is possible, X-rays are taken and read on site. You leave with a diagnosis, medication sent to your pharmacy, a brace, splint, sling or boot if needed, a written home plan, and a note for work, school or sports. Most visits, including X-ray, are finished within the hour.

Cost and insurance

Billed at your plan's urgent care copay, with X-rays and supplies itemized. We accept Medicare, Tricare, UnitedHealthcare, Blue Cross Blue Shield, Aetna, Cigna, Humana, AHCCCS and most major plans, and post self-pay prices. We do not accept workers' compensation claims. Back, neck and joint questions we hear every week

Which back, neck and joint problems do you treat?

Acute low back strain and muscle spasm, sciatica and pinched-nerve pain into the leg or arm, neck strain and whiplash, knee sprains, meniscus and runner's knee, ankle sprains, shoulder strains and rotator cuff pain, tennis and golfer's elbow, wrist and hand injuries, hip and bursitis pain, gout flares, and arthritis flare-ups. Anything that started suddenly or got worse in the last few weeks is a good fit for a walk-in visit.

What treatment can you give me in the clinic?

Depending on the diagnosis: anti-inflammatory and muscle relaxant prescriptions, a steroid injection or short oral steroid course for severe inflammation, splints, braces, slings, walking boots and crutches, wound care for road rash, and specific home exercise instructions. We can also start a gout treatment the same visit and order labs on site.

Do you treat sciatica and pinched nerves?

Yes. Sharp, shooting pain down the leg from the low back, or down the arm from the neck, is examined for nerve involvement and weakness. Most cases improve with anti-inflammatories, a short steroid course when appropriate, activity guidance and time; we refer for imaging or spine care when there's progressive weakness, numbness in the saddle area, or bladder or bowel changes.

I fell or had a car accident and my neck or back hurts. Should I come to urgent care?

Yes, if you're walking, talking and stable. We examine you for fractures and nerve injury, X-ray the painful area on site, treat muscle strain and whiplash, and document the visit for insurance. A serious mechanism with severe pain, numbness or weakness is evaluated immediately and escalated when needed.

Is it a sprain or a fracture? How do you tell?

We use the exam — where it's tender, whether you can bear weight, how stable the joint is — plus on-site X-ray when the findings call for it (the same criteria emergency departments use). Both sprains and non-displaced fractures are managed here with splinting or bracing; fractures that need surgical care are splinted and referred to orthopedics.

Can you help with a gout attack or an arthritis flare?

Yes. A red, hot, exquisitely tender big toe, ankle or knee is often gout; we confirm with exam and uric acid or joint fluid testing when needed and start treatment the same day. Osteoarthritis and rheumatoid flares are treated with anti-inflammatories, steroid injections when appropriate, bracing and a plan back to your primary care doctor or rheumatologist.

I've run out of my anti-inflammatory or muscle relaxant. Can you refill it?

Usually, yes. Non-controlled medications such as meloxicam, naproxen, cyclobenzaprine, methocarbamol or gabapentin can be bridge-refilled after an evaluation if you can't reach your prescriber. We do not refill controlled substances such as opioids or benzodiazepines.

How much does a visit cost, and what about X-rays?

A musculoskeletal visit is billed at your plan's urgent care copay; X-rays and splints are itemized and covered by most plans. We accept Medicare, Tricare, UnitedHealthcare, Blue Cross Blue Shield, Aetna, Cigna, Humana, AHCCCS and most major plans, and post self-pay prices for the visit, X-ray and supplies. We do not accept workers' compensation claims.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know before your visit. Can’t find your answer? Call us at (520) 232-2525.

Can you evaluate knee pain without an appointment?

Yes. Walk in Monday through Saturday, 7am to 7pm — no appointment or referral. A provider examines the knee, tests stability and range of motion, X-rays it on site if a fracture or significant injury is possible, and you leave with a diagnosis, a brace or splint if needed, a treatment plan and a note for work or school. Most knee visits are done within the hour.

Yes. Digital X-ray for knees, ankles, feet, wrists, hands, elbows, shoulders, hips, ribs and spine is done in the clinic and read the same visit. If a fracture or dislocation is found we splint it on site and arrange orthopedic follow-up; if it’s clear, you get a sprain or strain plan and go home.
