Understanding Your Testing Options

Testing Answers a Question — It Isn't a Menu

Testing is ordered to answer a specific clinical question, not chosen from a list. Here's how that decision works.

🧪 Rapid, On-Site Tests

Many common tests — flu, strep, COVID-19, urinalysis, some blood work — are run and read right at our clinic, so your provider often has a result before you leave.

📮 Send-Out Tests

Some tests require an outside laboratory to process. When this applies, your provider will explain the test, the expected wait for results, and how you'll be notified.

Come ready to describe the symptom or question you'd like evaluated. Your provider decides which test, if any, is appropriate — and for severe symptoms, that decision is guided by clinical urgency, not by a specific test a patient may request.

How We Decide

Testing Is Part of the Medical Evaluation

Laboratory tests should answer a clinical question. Your provider first evaluates your symptoms and determines which test, if any, is appropriate. Results are then interpreted together with your history and examination rather than in isolation.

How testing works at Sanova

Every test begins with a provider — a nurse practitioner or physician — who listens to your symptoms and orders the tests that will actually change your treatment, rather than a menu of tests you have to choose from yourself. Rapid tests run while you wait and are reviewed with you in the exam room. Blood is drawn in the clinic and sent to our reference lab; a provider reviews the results when they return, usually within 24 to 48 hours, and calls you with the result and any prescription or next step. Results are sent to your primary care doctor on request.

Common reasons Oro Valley and Catalina patients come in for testing

Sore throat and fever (strep vs. viral), flu-like illness, a cough that has lasted more than two weeks (chest X-ray plus Valley Fever testing), burning with urination, fatigue and weight change (thyroid, anemia, diabetes screening), a possible STI exposure, follow-up labs a doctor ordered but a hospital draw station is inconvenient, and pre-employment or sports-physical requirements. Blood pressure is checked at every visit — see high blood pressure care.

Cost, insurance and time

Testing is billed with your urgent care visit. Medicare, Tricare, UnitedHealthcare, Blue Cross Blue Shield, Aetna, Cigna, Humana, AHCCCS and most major plans cover medically necessary testing at urgent care. Self-pay patients see individual test prices on our insurance and costs page before anything is drawn. Most visits with rapid testing finish within the hour. Lab testing questions we hear every week

Which tests give results while I wait?

Rapid influenza A/B, strep A, COVID-19 antigen, urinalysis and urine dipstick, urine pregnancy, fingerstick glucose and rapid mono typically result in 10 to 20 minutes. Our providers use them to start treatment before you leave.

What blood tests can you draw on site?

Complete blood count (CBC), comprehensive and basic metabolic panels (kidney function, electrolytes, liver enzymes, glucose), lipid panel, hemoglobin A1c, thyroid (TSH), iron studies, vitamin D and B12, uric acid, and inflammation markers such as CRP and ESR. STI panels and Valley Fever antibody testing are also drawn here. Most result within 24 to 48 hours.

Can I get lab work done if my primary care doctor ordered it?

Often, yes. Bring the order and we'll draw the tests we're able to run and send results to your doctor — a convenient option for SaddleBrooke, Catalina and Oro Valley patients who don't want to drive to a hospital draw station. Call (520) 232-2525 first so we can confirm the specific tests and your insurance coverage for outside orders.

Do you test for Valley Fever?

Yes. A cough, fatigue, fevers, night sweats or a rash that lingers more than two or three weeks in the Tucson area raises the question of Valley Fever (coccidioidomycosis). We order the antibody blood test, add a chest X-ray on site when indicated, and manage or refer based on the result.

Can you check my blood sugar, cholesterol or thyroid without a doctor's order?

Yes. A provider visit is part of every lab test at Sanova, and screening for diabetes (A1c and glucose), cholesterol and thyroid function can be ordered during that visit when it's medically appropriate — for example, unexplained fatigue, weight change or family history. We'll review the results with you and send them to your primary care doctor.

Do you do drug testing and pre-employment screening?

Yes. Urine drug screens and pre-employment health screenings are offered for local employers and job applicants on a walk-in basis. See our drug testing and pre-employment screening page for details and pricing.

How much does lab testing cost, and does insurance cover it?

Testing is billed alongside your urgent care visit. Most plans — Medicare, Tricare, UnitedHealthcare, Blue Cross Blue Shield, Aetna, Cigna, Humana and AHCCCS — cover medically necessary tests at urgent care. For self-pay patients, rapid tests and common panels are priced individually and posted on our insurance and costs page so you can see the cost before the swab or draw.

How and when will I get my results?

Rapid results are reviewed with you during the visit. Send-out results are reviewed by a provider as soon as they return — usually 24 to 48 hours — and we call you with the result and any prescription or next step. Copies go to your primary care doctor on request.

Everything you need to know before your visit. Can’t find your answer? Call us at (520) 232-2525.

Can I simply walk in for testing?

Yes. Walk in Monday through Saturday, 7am to 7pm — no appointment, no referral. A provider will see you first, decide which tests answer your question, and most rapid tests (flu, strep, COVID, urine, pregnancy, glucose) result while you wait. Blood panels sent to our reference lab usually result within 24 to 48 hours, and we call you with results and a plan.

Yes. Digital X-ray for chest, limbs and spine is done in the clinic and read the same visit, so a cough that needs a chest film or an injury that needs imaging is handled in one stop. See our X-ray and fracture care page.
