Same-Day Evaluation for High Blood Pressure

Seeing a very high blood pressure number can be concerning, particularly when it is unexpected. Sanova can evaluate elevated blood pressure, assess associated symptoms, and determine whether the situation is appropriate for outpatient treatment and follow-up or requires emergency care.

Deciding On Evaluation

Got an Unexpected High Reading?

An unexpectedly high reading needs prompt clinical review — that's different from ongoing chronic hypertension management. Here's how to think about it:

🔁 Repeat the Reading

Retake the measurement appropriately (proper cuff size, seated, rested) before assuming it's accurate.

👀 Watch for Symptoms

Pay attention to chest pain, shortness of breath, weakness, numbness, vision changes or speech difficulty.

📋 Bring Your Readings

Home or pharmacy readings, your medication list and the time of your last dose help us decide the same day whether to adjust, refill or start treatment.

ℹ️ Above 180/120 with no symptoms? Walk in today — we'll repeat the reading, evaluate you and treat the same visit. With chest pain, shortness of breath, weakness or vision or speech changes, call 911.

Important To Know

When Urgent Care Isn't the Right Fit

Urgent care is not intended to replace long-term primary-care management of chronic hypertension — but it can help evaluate an unexpectedly elevated reading or other immediate concern.

High Blood Pressure Near Oro Valley and Catalina: Checked, Treated and Refilled the Same Day

A high number on the pharmacy cuff, a home reading that keeps climbing, a medication bottle that ran empty while your doctor is booked out — these are the blood pressure problems that shouldn't wait for a physical in three months. Sanova Urgent Care on North Oracle Road evaluates blood pressure on a walk-in basis, runs the labs and EKG on site, and can start or refill medication the same visit, then hands the plan back to your primary care doctor.

An unexpected high reading

We repeat the measurement properly — correct cuff size, seated and rested, both arms — and look for the reversible causes: pain, decongestants or NSAIDs, missed doses, caffeine, dehydration and heat, anxiety or poor sleep. If your baseline is truly high, we treat it rather than sending you away with "follow up with your doctor."

Out of medication, can't reach your doctor

Lisinopril, losartan, amlodipine, metoprolol, hydrochlorothiazide and other routine blood pressure medications can be bridge-refilled here after a quick evaluation, so you're never off treatment while waiting for a PCP appointment. Bring your bottle or a list. We do not refill controlled substances. See Online medication refills in Arizona.

Starting treatment for the first time

When repeat readings confirm hypertension, we can begin a first-line medication chosen for your age, kidney function and other conditions, teach you how to monitor at home, and schedule a recheck. Labs before starting — kidney function, electrolytes, glucose, cholesterol — are drawn on site. See lab testing.

Winter residents and Medicare patients

SaddleBrooke and Sun City Oro Valley residents whose physician is out of state use us as their local blood pressure check-in from November through April: readings, labs, refills and a summary sent home. We accept Medicare and all Medicare Advantage plans.

What happens at your visit

Vital signs, then a provider reviews your readings, symptoms, medications and history and repeats your blood pressure after you've rested. Depending on the findings we may run urinalysis, fingerstick glucose and an EKG on site, and draw a basic metabolic panel, A1c, lipid panel and thyroid here (results in about one business day) to rule out kidney, heart or metabolic causes and to choose the safest medication. You'll leave with a clear plan: a new or refilled prescription sent to your pharmacy, a home-monitoring log, and a summary for your primary care doctor. Most visits take under an hour.

Symptoms that change the plan

Most hypertension has no symptoms, which is why we check it at every visit for every patient. A reading of 180/120 or higher with chest pain, shortness of breath, weakness or numbness, vision or speech changes, or confusion is a hypertensive emergency — call 911. Above 180/120 without symptoms, walk in today and we'll evaluate you immediately. Related symptoms we treat here: headaches, dizziness and dehydration.

Cost and insurance

A blood pressure visit is billed at your plan's urgent care copay. We accept Medicare, Tricare, UnitedHealthcare, Blue Cross Blue Shield, Aetna, Cigna, Humana, AHCCCS and most major plans, and post self-pay prices for the visit and labs. Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know before your visit. Can’t find your answer? Call us at (520) 232-2525.

Can Sanova treat elevated blood pressure?

Yes. A provider repeats your reading with the right cuff after you’ve rested, reviews your symptoms, medications and history, checks for causes such as pain, decongestants, missed doses or dehydration, and can order labs or an EKG on site. Depending on the picture we adjust or start medication the same day, give you a home-monitoring plan, and send the visit summary to your primary care doctor.

Yes. If you’ve run out of lisinopril, losartan, amlodipine, metoprolol, hydrochlorothiazide or another routine blood pressure medication and can’t get a timely appointment, our providers can evaluate you and write a bridge refill to carry you to your next PCP visit. Bring your bottle or a list of what you take. We do not refill controlled substances.

If the reading is 180/120 or higher, yes — come in today, even if you feel fine, so we can repeat it properly and evaluate you. If it’s elevated but below that and you have no symptoms, rest five minutes and repeat; if it stays above 140/90 on two or three readings, walk in this week for an evaluation rather than waiting months for a physical. Chest pain, shortness of breath, weakness, vision or speech changes with a high reading are a 911 situation.

Pain, anxiety, a missed dose, decongestants and NSAIDs, caffeine and energy drinks, alcohol, poor sleep, dehydration and heat, a full bladder, and simply the stress of being measured (white-coat effect). Part of our evaluation is finding the reversible cause; part is deciding whether your baseline pressure needs treatment.

Repeat readings in both arms, a focused exam, and — when indicated — urinalysis, fingerstick glucose and an EKG on site, plus a basic metabolic panel (kidney function and electrolytes), A1c, lipid panel and thyroid drawn here with results in about one business day. Results guide which medication is safest for you and go to your primary care doctor.

We can start medication when your readings and evaluation warrant it — typically a first-line agent chosen for your age, kidney function and other conditions — along with a home-monitoring plan and a follow-up with your primary care doctor within a few weeks. Long-term management belongs with your PCP; we make sure you’re not unprotected while you wait for that appointment.

Yes. Bring your medication list and any recent readings. We can check your pressure, run labs your doctor would want, refill your routine medications, and send everything back to your home physician. Many of our winter residents use us for exactly this from November through April.

Sometimes — a dull morning headache at the back of the head, dizziness or lightheadedness (especially if medication is too strong or you’re dehydrated) and nosebleeds can accompany high or poorly controlled pressure. Most of the time hypertension has no symptoms at all, which is why we check it at every urgent care visit.

It’s billed as an urgent care visit at your plan’s urgent care copay. We accept Medicare and Medicare Advantage, Tricare, UnitedHealthcare, Blue Cross Blue Shield, Aetna, Cigna, Humana, AHCCCS and most major plans. Self-pay prices for the visit and any labs are posted on our insurance and costs page.

Yes. Elevated readings in children and adolescents are increasingly common; we measure with a pediatric cuff, repeat properly, and coordinate with your pediatrician if it’s persistently high.
